I am currently working towards my bachelor's degree online through the University of Oklahoma. I have loved the online format and the freedom to work from home on my own time schedule. Since I live about 25 miles from the closest college, this also saves me hundreds of dollars in gasoline and car maintenance.

I can see your point on technical books, but in both of my business degrees, I used Half and Ebay with great success. For those fast moving technical fields, though, you might want to stick with new. But even then, you can buy them online and save!

Thanks for commenting!

<a href="#comment-2648" rel="nofollow">#</a>Richard @ Student Scrooge→
Both my undergrad and graduate degrees came from schools that have traditional classes AND online classes. Most colleges and universities operate that way now anyway. Neither the degree transcripts nor the diplomas say anything about being "online" so it hasn't been an issue for me.

My father in law made a comment about online schools and I replied to him, "Welcome to the 21st Century." Honestly, going forward, does anyone NOT think that online education will be the predominant modus operandi? There will always be diehard traditionalists, but the world is changing fast!

I think online courses are a great idea generally -- I especially agree with the notion that online courses give you a chance to conveniently be exposed to new idea -- a continuing education of sorts.

Do you have any concerns about any sort of "stigma" associated with a whole degree earned online? I've always wondered how exactly they are perceived by, say, human resource managers, when they see an online degree vs. offline degree. I would imagine this is changing, but I really have no idea.

Great article. While online learning is not for everyone, it can be really great for those who have the discipline and motivation!

Having gotten my Bachelors Degree online, I would agree with one exception: In Point #8, you say, "You’ll be able to save significant amounts of money by purchasing your books online through sites like Ebay, or Half.com." Many schools have special editions of textbooks for their online classes. These change often enough that someone taking the same course as you as little as four months later could need a different textbook, especially in the techonological subjects.
