Great post! People are clueless on how to handle a severance package after they lose a job. You would think people would use common sense and bank their money as they go through a financial crisis. Unfortunately, though, with the lack of financial education in this country, they do stupid with zeros on the end.

Good article... I recently accepted a buyout and have been active in the job market for a couple weeks. It would have been so easy to burn through a huge chunk of my buyout if had not been paying attention... and even if my intentions were noble (paying off our last non-mortgage debt) it would have taken a bite out of the buyout amount.

Leaving the total intact - less minimal monthly operating expenses - insures that we have a long runway in the event the job market is as bad as the media makes it out to be.

Fortunately, the media is wrong - go to Indeed.com or Oodle.com and setup a couple searches and daily reports if you question the current hiring market.

This activity doesn't temp me to suddenly liquidate my buyout, but rather it inspires to me to land something soon. Then I'll have a job with a similar income to my last job AND a (reasonable sized) pile of money!

Spending opportunities will always exist... so it just makes good sense to wait until you're spending from a position of strength.

Great topic, thanks for sharing!
