Except that it creates discord amongst a team. Let's face it, rarely are two individuals exactly capable, exactly educated, exactly comparable in salary negotiation skills.

As a human resources professional with 25 years experience in businesses from multi-billion dollar companies to powerhouse regionals, to small one location operations, to my own company (twice), there has NEVER been an instance where employees comparing paychecks has ever worked out well. Someone is always disgusted and feels cheated -- even when they perform entirely different jobs (bookkeeper and truck driver in one case).

If you agreed to a certain rate of pay, you agreed to it. If you want to renegotiate you have that right, but if you come to me crying "It's not fair! She makes more than me!" -- lets just say that isn't the best career move ...

I agree. Not discussing compensation with others doing quite similar work leaves you at a disadvantage. Let's face it: Companies pay as little as they can get by with paying. This particular piece of advice is not in the interest of the average worker.

I'm not sure about that not discussing salary rule - I have found that comparing salaries (with those co-workers I trust) helps us all to know whether we are being paid fairly. This is especially true with raises and bonuses. Why give the higher ups an opportunity to cheat you just because of your ignorance?

Good points! Being a manager isn't an easy thing so these are some pretty fair guidelines to keep when holding that position in a company or business.
