Thanks Kathleen. Experience should reign when it comes to choosing a mentor. It should reign when choosing leaders of state and leaders of companies too. Unfortunately, too many of those in power place too high a value on youth and growth potential and not enough on wisdom or experience.

You can't read a book on leadership and think you're now a leader because you can quote it. You can't read a book on parenting and know more than your mother or grandmother. You can't read a book on writing and suddenly become an accomplished writer.

Experience, gained through repeated practice, is what makes someone accomplished.

Thanks for stopping by!

I was so glad to see that you added a section on "been there, done that". There are many trying to coach and mentor that have not "walked their talk". I am successful due to the fact that everything I teach I have personally done successfully. I also appreciate your mention of integrity. There is a lot of "get rich quick" out there. Hard work, persistence and maintaining stellar standards is the key.

Cheers!

Interesting topic. As a student, I've seen and reaped the benefits of mentorship programs simply because it is nice to have someone to show you the ropes. Many schools offer these kinds of programs where upperclassmen and new students team up to help each other out. In this case, the freshmen are able to learn a lot about different resources and availabilities. Overall, I think mentors are great because they are just a good support group for you and whatever you hope to achieve.
