I wrote it because I wanted to know why thrift went from a trait that Americans admired (a la Ben Franklin) to one that was considered almost a character flaw. In a world we're told regularly that consumer spending drives the economy, it became unpatriotic to be frugal (especially after World War II). I disagree with that -- I think frugal people helped build this country, and thrift will be a key ingredient to get us out of our current mess and back on track economically.
