I would highly recommend reading it. You can read it in only a few hours and it's ideas and principles are stunning. At least they were to me... :D

You made my point! You just described "experiencing" time with family and friends in your kitchen as well as making memories and that's great. But if you are just putting in new cabinets to keep up with the Joneses, then you're wasting resources that could be better spent on experiences with people you love or on some other financially wise project/decision.

As far as a trip to Disney being the height of consumerism, I disagree. I took my wife and three kids back in 2005 and it was a wonderful family trip that my children and I will remember the rest of our lives. We had a fabulous time with each other, going on rides, water parks, and experiencing being with each other. I'll take that over any "thing."

i really enjoyed this book as well, and it was small enough to be an easy weekend read. Funny how some smaller books pack more of a punch than much longer ones.

I have to disagree with the kitchen cabinets. I've hated my kitchen since we moved it. It was poorly/cheaply redone in the 70s and, while it could be far, far worse, there's much about it that doesn't make me happy. A trip to Disney World (besides being the height of consumerism) might be something I'll remember for a long time, but it will only last 4 days or so. I am in my kitchen every single day I'm home, usually for at least an hour over the course of the day, sometimes for 5-10 hours if I'm baking/cooking/canning. I will spend far more time in that kitchen than I will on any vacation anywhere. And I will be making many, many memories, like the ones of baking with my daughter and teaching her to cook and feeding my family delicious (and sometimes not so delicious) meals. Why not make those memories happier and the experience more fun and easier by redoing it instead of a couple vacations?!

I've seen it in my parents kitchen which they remodeled about 8 years ago. How we love hanging out in that room now compared to the space when they bought it!
