Living frugally and saving more early are definitely important. As for a side job, many retirees won't have a choice. People used to work until they died quite often, it's only been within the past 50 years of increasing life expectancies that people have dreamed of a 20 year retirement.

"Debt is the biggest enemy to retirement."
Truer words were never spoken. I guess the best way to think about it is to count up all your non-mortgage expenses like food, taxes, property taxes, utilities, and spending money. If that was all you needed, you really COULD survive on considerably less.

This is a good post.

Debt is the biggest enemy to retirement. If you have no debt at retirement (especially if you own your home outright), then you don't need much money at ALL to retire.

On the other hand, people who are strapped have to work forever (even if they have a lot of money saved).
