Path of Least Resistance: Learning to Become the Creative Force in Your Own Life by Robert Fritz was a wonderful little book about creating anything, based not on some sort of psychological mumbo-jumbo, but on the traditions of arts and sciences. The three basic insights of the book:

  1. You got to where you are in life right now by moving along the path of least resistance much like a river meanders along the path that is most comfortable to you.
  2. The underlying structure of your life determines this path of least resistance just like mountains and valleys determine where rivers go.
  3. You CAN change the underlying structure of your life just as engineers change the underlying structure of a river bottom to channel it where they would like it to go.

In other words, you don’t have to be a victim of your life. You can change it into whatever you wish to create by the sheer force of your creative will. Do you have the courage to change it?

From the back cover:

You will learn:

  • The steps of creating — from conceiving the result to taking action to building momentum.
  • The importance of creating what you truly love.
  • The creative cycle and how to make the most of each stage.
  • Why manipulating willpower, affirmations, positive thinking, and other human potential programs won’t work.
  • How to focus the creative process from where you are to where you want to be.

The author teaches readers how to make the conscious effort to become the predominant creative force in your own life, whether you’re creating a new computer program, a training regimen for your sales force, a work of art, or a contented family. Creativity, according to the author, isn’t genetic, but a learned skill that can be practiced, mastered, and taught.

Your description of this book reminds me of something that happened to me in a bar 10 years ago, just before I quit drinking. An older gentleman I’d never seen before sat down next to me, looked at me, and said, without so much as a “hello” beforehand, “You could accomplish anything you want to if you’d just get out of your own damn way.”

10 years later, and I’m still working on it, so I think I’d like to read this even if I don’t win it. =)
