Had a similar situation happen to me once. The hospitals would not take my wife in. I had a Dr. friend see her and we got it taken care of. I’ve had insurance ever since. Good advice.

I went without insurance for a while and luckily didn’t need it. I think the being young part is in thinking “that couldn’t happen to me.” That was a few years ago, but I won’t go without insurance again. I realize at this point how dangerous it actually is.

I also want to point out, being “young” has nothing to do with it. You can be hit by a car, needing your appendix removed, or diagnosed with cancer at any age.

I was in your situation when I was 20 (just 10 years ago). I just started a new job, not dependent on my parents, nor was I in school and had to wait 90 days for my coverage to kick in. To top it off, I had pre-existing conditions that kept me from private insurance. I thought I would just wait it out. That was the biggest financial mistake I made in my life.

Very happy to hear your wife got the treatment she needed and someone was kind enough to pick up the tab. I went without health insurance for a few months after separating from the Air Force, but I was young, healthy and single. It was a risk I thought I could afford, and luckily it turned out well. It is not a decision I would make again though!
