We live in an equatorial climate country, so we are blessed in not having these ice storms and such. It must be tough to live in freezing weather without the amenities we are so used to. I went through frequent blackouts whilst working in Ghana. Still Ghana's climate is equatorial. The worst we had to go through was not having air conditioning, something that I would any day prefer over not having heat. It's great that you are seeing the positive side of this miserable 10 days. We have a 5500 watt generator and it will run on 6 gallons for about 9 or 10 hours. It ran almost continuously (except for overnight), and the outage was more of an inconvenience than a disaster (had furnace, microware, refrigerator, some lights, and low and behold, broadband Internet). Due to the low temperatures, the house would have been unlivable during most of the time otherwise (most of the neighbors went to live with relatives or in a motel). So a generator is a good investment, but make sure you get one that connects directly to the house current, and have it installed by an electrician.
