As a mother of 3 girls ages 11 mos, 2 and 5 it is very easy to turn the TV on and tell the older 2 to sit there while I take care of baby sister. Many parents are busy and do use the TV as a sitter. I now give my kids a book and have them look at the pictures and tell me the story. By doing this and seeing sight words my new 5 year old is reading. I remember going out side to play or doing educational activities, now kids can tell you about every Spongebob episode before knowing their alphabet.

I totally agree. This was something that I was thinking about recently myself. The best years of my life were those five spent without a TV, but hubby is addicted. It got me wondering at what stage do we teach children about advertising? Without exposure to it and an understanding of how it manipulates, doesn't that leave them vunerable as adults? Just a thought.

Good suggestions. A little mean, but yeah, they could very well work.
Luckily, I wasn't one of those kids who got so caught up with toys or consumerism. I'd rather sleep and eat that play with toys. :D

Excellent post which in my mind is the beginning of unplugging from the matrix. I think television puts mind viruses into our minds and they spread because of it. Although I'm working from home and unemployed while build my blog, I'm trying to limit my exposure to television and watching movies. I've also been listening to tons of new audiobooks.

This really hit home. I've just had occasion to spend time with my son and his girlfriend. She has two wonderful little girls, age 6 and 2. With my 51st birthday approaching, and with two grown boys-30 and 22, I had forgotten the impact of Disney characters and TV shows on kids and consummerism. Hannah Montana, The Jonas Bros, Dora the Explorer were all part of the little girls' "regular programming". I did observe a healthy interest in the pool and playing outside and was heartened to see it.

Excellent suggestions all! And one more - not original with me; Humble Wife near Alamogordo NM put this up on her blog -

Pull out a book and read to them. Especially some of the all-time favorites. My oldest granddaughter is now reading the Harry Potter books and Lloyd Alexander's Taran Wanderer series (based on Welsh legends); I brought a copy of Wind in the Willows for her to read on a recent trip.

The southern New Mexico blogger also pointed out that any thrift store will have these classics on its book shelves Really Cheap. I agree: I just acquired some adult classics (Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius) in a handsome clothbound edition and readable, straightforward translation, from a local charity thrift store.

Used books are your friend!
