This week my daughter spent 4 days in the hospital with another Crohn’s disease flare up. For those who don’t know, Crohn’s disease is an autoimmune disease that typically manifests itself in the intestinal tract. The body’s immune system attacks the small intestine (as well as other parts of the intestinal tract) and causes extreme pain. Her small intestine was almost 100% blocked and doctors thought they would have to operate to remove the affected section (about 10 cm). Thankfully, our doctor was able to alter her medications and reduce the inflammation that was causing her so much pain and discomfort, though a resection is still a possibility down the road.
It is never easy to watch your child suffer and this week has been especially hard. I was out of town when she was admitted to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis and knowing that my wife had to handle everything alone made me feel horrible. But she is a trooper and a very strong woman. I am thankful every day that she is by my side. I really need to take Glblguy’s advice on preparing my wife to take over our finances in case something happens to me.
I know my posting schedule hasn’t lived up to reader’s normal expectations this week, but now that we have my baby girl home from the hospital and the rest of our children are back home after living with friends all week, things should return to some semblance of normalcy! I hope …
Here are some links I read this week that I really enjoyed. I think you’ll enjoy them, too, so please visit!
Madison from My Dollar Plan has the details on the $8,000 fist time home buyer tax credit. I wish this had been available to ME when I bought my first home years ago. I could have finished the basement!
Jason over at Frugal Dad pinpointed some of his frugal roots by remembering frugal camping trips with his grandfather. Camping is something that my family and I enjoy so I plan to schedule a trip as soon as the weather breaks.
After reading How to be an Awesome Control Freak over at My Supercharged Life, I was struck how really out of control our lives actually are. Control is an illusion. Does that make control freaks illusionists?
Sara from On Simplicity advocates learning How to Party Like a Five Year Old to keep yourself young and vibrant. Kids are great teachers.
Not only are kids great at teaching us to live a more simple life, they also follow the 8 Ways to Inspire Others found at Marc and Angel Hack Life.
Think the stimulus plan was a good idea? Think again. From a historical viewpoint, stimulus plans are foolish wastes of taxpayer money. But if you want to see how you will benefit, check out how the stimulus will affect individuals from Pete at Bible Money Matters.
If we could turn money into time … that would be too many zeros, but check out how you can turn YOUR money into time at Five Cent Nickel.
In one of my favorite posts of the week, PT Money tells us how to stick it to the man with a list of things you should NEVER pay for.
Over at The Digerati Life, I read about stress at work and job burnout.
David’s post town cutting budgets and people hurting was a great reminder to use some common sense when dealing with your finances.

I’m sorry to hear about your daughter, hopefully she’ll be feeling better, and there will be some healing so that surgery won’t be necessary. I have a friend who has Crohn’s disease, and it really can very hard. My prayers go out to you.
I agree that the stimulus is an extremely bad idea, but you may as well be educated about it and take advantage if you can, right?
So glad to hear your daughter is home Ron!
We all want some control in our lives. You have had a wild ride lately. I think you deserve to be a control freak for awhile! Hope things settle down with your daughter’s health. She is in our prayers!
That article on inspiring others is fantastic. I’m going to link to that one from my blog.
How’s your daughter doing today?
Glad things are somewhat back to normal, Ron. Will say a prayer for your little one.

Thank you for your concern, thoughts, and prayers. She is doing pretty well today and we’re thankful for that. We’re learning to just take one day at a time and we’re hoping and praying that this new medication will prevent (or at least delay) the need for surgery.
She’s a tough little cookie and we’re thankful every day to have her.
