Roundup and Link Love: How Income Changes Over Time
Posted By Ron On November 19, 2010 @ 2:00 AM In Roundup and Link Love | Comments Disabled
I just received my Social Security statement for the year. I’ve never paid too much attention to it but this year I decided to look at how my income has changed, percentage-wise, since I first started working as a 16 year old in 1982 for a meat market in a local grocery store. Interestingly, my income doubled the next year when I stated receiving tips as a bag boy who carried groceries out and loaded them into the cars of our customers. Who says a service job doesn’t pay?
Though the changes to my income over 28 years of working are drastic, it doesn’t feel that way. Today I make more per day than I did per year in 1982 but I’ve had up years and some down years. In the early 90’s my income dropped 86 percent over three years, but then rebounded over 3,000 percent in the three years following. Those down years were the years I went into massive credit card debt that took over a decade to get out of.
Because your income can change no matter where you are in your career, you should never think your situation is hopeless. You aren’t stuck. There is always something you can change and 999 times out of 1,000 the something that needs to be changed is … you.
