So Where Are All Those Clunkers Going?

The Cash for Clunkers program, after getting another shot in the arm from your tax dollars, appears to be live and well, despite claims of it’s potential demise. So, where are all those traded-in clunkers going?

Will those gas-guzzling clunkers be taken off our roads?

Will those gas-guzzling clunkers be melted down and sold for scrap?

Will those gas-guzzling clunkers be melted down and made into affordable housing?

Will those gas-guzzling clunkers just go away and leave us alone?

Will those gas-guzzling clunkers be sold in other countries?

General Motors will be selling them on eBay! Will the next big government fraud be double clunker dipping?

Here is my two cents, not that it matters. I work for a BMW/ Mini Dealer in Dallas, Texas. We have to pour a liquid into the engine to sieze the motor and then the cars will be sold to a scrap yard. This is the only way we can get paid out portion from the government. We have to show that the car engine was destroyed and then we have to have proof from a scrap yard.

I’m confused… the article you linked only talks about new cars being sold on Ebay. It doesn’t mention the clunker cars at all.

I think you a bit off on the reselling of the “clunkers”. They all need to be destroyed by the dealers when they are taken in. Here is a source http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/32331992/ns/business-autos/

I don’t think any of the clunker cars are getting sold on Ebay, it would be way too obvious to catch them selling a car that obviously fits the description of “clunker.” I think the dealer was confused. Although, I can see them using the parts. Which is fine, hopefully (!) it would bring down the cost when I go to the mechanic, but I doubt it!

Your local car dealer is wrong. Any car that is traded in under the CARS program is required to have the engine disabled in the manner described above, where sodium silicate is poured into the engine, and the engine is run until it is seized. The rest of the car can be dismantled for parts. There will be no “Cash for Clunkers” cars that are sold on eBay as part of the official GM program, which is for new cars only. Your dealer may trying to cheat the system and sell the USED cars on eBay, but agan, this is not part of the GM/eBay program.

My son is an Automotive technician for a Nissan dealership. They are also required to pour liquid into the engine to destroy it. Then the cars are sold to a scrap yard. None of the cars he has worked on are able to be resold. He told me that the clunkers are utterly undriveable and unfixable once they get done with them.

Our local news stations (in CT) have all had at least one story each about the process that is used to make the clunkers undriveable. While a few might slip through, there is no way they could be openly sold.
