In the so called &quot;age of information&quot; critical analysis of the topic should take precedence over authorative sources. However, we arn&#039;t really taught critical thinking. 		<description>Sometimes asserting higher authority is unanswerable - like when my children cite their mother&#039;s permission as a reason for turning on the TV.....

On a more serious note, referring to decisions made by more senior people (higher authority) in an organisation is often an effective means of terminating irritating discussions (or at least getting them off my desk so I can get some real work done).</description>
